About Amherst College

Considered a premier liberal arts college, Amherst enrolls roughly 1,800 students from nearly every state and over 50 foreign countries. With an emphasis on small classes, close contact with faculty and extensive undergraduate research opportunities, the college's open curriculum offers students unusual freedom to design an individualized academic program of study across the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, combining broad, interdisciplinary education with in-depth knowledge in the major field. We ensure that students develop strong critical thinking and problem solving skills which are highly sought after by the top employers and graduate programs. Through the college's membership in the Five College Consortium, Amherst students may also take courses for degree credit at Smith, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts.

Why attend Amherst College

Amherst College participates in the Department of Veteran's Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program and, for qualifying students, do not cap Yellow Ribbon spaces nor do we cap the maximum school contribution per student regardless of major. As such, Amherst College is tuition-free for all eligible students. As an alternative to using benefits, Amherst encourages all student veterans to apply for the college's generous need-based, no-loan financial aid which supports Amherst's commitment to diversity across national, racial, ethnic and socioeconomic dimensions. As a result, many of our student veterans save their Department of Veteran's Affairs educational benefits for a future educational opportunity.
