New Mexico State University (NMSU) is the state’s land-grant university, serving the educational needs of New Mexico’s diverse population through comprehensive programs of education, research, and service at the undergraduate and graduate levels. NMSU was founded in 1888 as Las Cruces College and later renamed New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. In 1960, the constitution of New Mexico formally recognized NMSU a major institution of higher education. NMSU sits on a 900-acre campus, is a NASA Space-Grant College, a Hispanic-Serving Institution and is home to the very first Honors College in New Mexico. U.S. News and World Report ranks NMSU in the top tier among Best National Universities; based on an assessment of excellence, graduation/retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving.
